I learned my lesson of having zero debt when my husband died. I had to sell a nice property we had just bought the year before. I had to sell it and I used what money I had to buy a place outright and I bought my car outright also! My mother was always trying to get me to do store credit on furniture etc but I refused to do that. I sold my last place and am holding the mortgage and bought my current place outright. Because I have a small farm here I am able to make a little money from the property via produce and meat that I have grown here. The taxes are super cheap so I can pay for them with any sales I make.
