I have a customer who's married to a Venezuelan woman recently immigrated and I asked him this question. He confirmed that basically it's true, but most Venezuelans don't have metals, most try to accumulate dollars. He's a currency trader full time. My opinion is that most people around the world are somewhat in the dark pertaining to real tangible money vs. paper currency, with some notable exceptions- Germany, India, China being the first ones that come to mind. I'd say that when things get really bad, people will get educated somewhat quickly from necessity. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
